MARYVILLE – Maryville started fast but couldn't sustain that momentum, and the Scots split a pair Saturday in their opening CCS tri-match of the season.
Maryville knocked off Belhaven 3-1 by the scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-14. Piedmont then defeated both Belhaven 3-1 and Maryville 3-0. The scores in the finale were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-16 in favor of the Lions. Piedmont's win snapped an eight-match losing streak to the Scots.
MC took the opening set against Belhaven in smooth fashion, leading from start to finish. The Scots finished it off by scoring the last six points, with
Addie Smith serving it out.
Cailin Mastropasqua posted a couple of kills and then
Kayli Altom finished the set with a kill for 25-17.
The Scots trailed from the get-go in Set No. 2, eventually falling 25-22. In the third set, the Scots and Blazers were tight throughout, with four ties and four lead changes. Three straight Maryville kills from Mastropasqua,
Kenzie Brewster and Smith pushed the lead to 18-13 and the held on to win 25-22.
In the fourth set, Maryville scored the first five points, the last two coming on kills by Mastropasqua and Smith. The closest Belhaven drew was four points in arrears, and Maryville coasted to a 25-14 triumph.
Mastropasqua had a career-high 17 kills to go with 11 digs. Smith had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 assists, and
Landry Frisch posted 10 kills and 12 digs for her own double-double. First-year setter
Ella Reyes added her debut collegiate double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs.
In the nightcap, Maryville attacked at just .047 for the match to Piedmont's .270. The Lions combined for 34 kills against just 10 errors, and they finished with 10 aces to Maryville's three.
The Scots are 6-8 overall and 1-1 in the CCS, while Piedmont's jumps to 5-7 and 3-0.
Maryville is back in action Tuesday night at Berea, which is 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the CCS. Start time is 6 p.m.
