Maryville Splits Opening CCS Tri-Match

Scots Handle Belhaven 3-1, Drop 3-0 Match to Piedmont

MARYVILLE – Maryville started fast but couldn't sustain that momentum, and the Scots split a pair Saturday in their opening CCS tri-match of the season.

Maryville knocked off Belhaven 3-1 by the scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-14. Piedmont then defeated both Belhaven 3-1 and Maryville 3-0. The scores in the finale were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-16 in favor of the Lions. Piedmont's win snapped an eight-match losing streak to the Scots.

MC took the opening set against Belhaven in smooth fashion, leading from start to finish. The Scots finished it off by scoring the last six points, with Addie Smith serving it out. Cailin Mastropasqua posted a couple of kills and then Kayli Altom finished the set with a kill for 25-17.

The Scots trailed from the get-go in Set No. 2, eventually falling 25-22. In the third set, the Scots and Blazers were tight throughout, with four ties and four lead changes. Three straight Maryville kills from Mastropasqua, Kenzie Brewster and Smith pushed the lead to 18-13 and the held on to win 25-22.
