Macon, Ga. – Sophie Tharpe scored a season-high 15 points Saturday afternoon to lead Maryville (9-9, 7-3 CCS) to a 65-41 victory over Wesleyan (1-15, 0-8 CC) in Macon, Georgia.
Maryville is 8-4 since Dec. 1 and has now won five games in a row for the first time since the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, where they won 10 straight to kick off the year.
Maryville wasted no time taking control of the contest, jumping out to a 9-0 run to start the first quarter, capped off by a three-pointer from
Olivia Cathers. The Wolves Angel Lockett scored the first bucket of the game for Wesleyan, but back-to-back threes from
Emily Allen and
Ella Haney quickly extended the Scots lead to 15-2
With 3:46 remaining in the first, the Scots had extended their lead to 18-3, before closing out the first 10 minutes of play ahead 22-7.
In the second quarter, MC outscored the Wolves 15-10, leading by as many as 20 points on two separate occasions. The Scots took a 20-point lead into the second half after
Gracyn Grantz recorded a layup with 22 seconds remaining.
Maryville began the second half the same way they started the first. The Scots burst out of the gates and recorded an 18-5 run over the first seven minutes of the half, giving Maryville its largest lead of the night 55-22.
The Wolves found their footing in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Scots 15-10, but it was too late as regulation ran out and Maryville celebrated its fifth victory in just eight days.
Sophie Tharpe was 5-of-8 from the field and 4-of-8 from the free-throw line to lead the Scots with 15 points. Her twin sister
Ella Tharpe recorded a team-high seven rebounds while adding four points of her own.
Carruthers followed Tharpe as Maryville's second-leading scorer, picking up 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting. 11 of the 14 players who saw action for Maryville scored in the contest.
The Scots outrebounded the Wolves 49-26, including an 18-6 advantage on the offensive side of the glass.
Maryville searches for their sixth consecutive win Tuesday night against rival CCS-foe Piedmont on the road in Demorest, Georgia. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
