Mastropasqua Celebrates 21st, Leads MC to Season Sweep at Covenant in Four-Set Thriller

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – For the first time since 2021, the Maryville Scots swept the season series against Covenant, snapping their rival's 25-match home winning streak in the process.

Fun Fact: Maryville was the last visiting team to win at the Barnes PE Center, claiming a 3-2 triumph back on Oct. 25, 2022.

Maryville came out strong Wednesday night, securing a 25-15 win in the first set. Landry Frisch's early barrage of kills helped the Scots grab a lead they held throughout the set.

After a 25-18 setback in the second set, Maryville flipped the switch in the third, battling to a 25-23 victory and shifting the momentum.

The night was especially memorable for outside hitter Cailin Mastropasqua, who tallied 16 kills, 15 digs, and an ace to celebrate her 21st birthday in a big way. Nine of those kills came in the crucial fourth set, which saw Maryville close out the match with a 25-20 win.

"I focused on keeping my team calm when we needed it," Mastropasqua said. "The game was all about breaking their runs and gaining momentum. I wanted to execute my swings when I had the chance and challenge the other team when I couldn't get a kill. I'm happy we got the win and doing it on my birthday made it even sweeter."

Under the Weather but Pushing Through
MC's performance was even more impressive given the adversity they faced, with several players competing at less than 100 percent.

"Several of our players were at about 60 percent due to illness," Maryville head coach Brienna Laskowski said. "It was inspiring to see them rally together and push through to the finish. As a coach, that was a great sight."

Key contributors included Katelyn Eldred with 17 digs, Frisch adding 10 kills, and Kenzie Brewster contributing eight kills and eight blocks.

Maryville improved to 14-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play, while Covenant is now 12-11 and 6-3. MC heads to Demorest, Georgia, on Saturday for rematches versus Belhaven at 2 p.m., followed by Piedmont at 4 p.m.
