Scots Tripped by Gettysburg 84-78; Meet Pfeiffer on Saturday Afternoon

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – A sizeable first-half deficit was too much for Maryville to overcome Friday night in an 84-78 defeat to Gettysburg at the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament.

The Scots never led in this one and trailed the undefeated Bullets (6-0) by as many as 18 points in the first half. Gettysburg shot 54 percent from the floor in that opening stanza, including 6-of-14 from downtown. The Pennsylvanians cooled to 0-of-10 from long range in the second, but never relinquished the lead.

Maryville pulled the deficit to single-digits on a Reed Kemp fastbreak layup that made it 58-49 with still 11:21 remaining. Gettysburg scored the next eight points to stretch the margin back to 17. Trailing 68-51, it was Maryville's turn for an 8-0 run capped by Jackson Garner swishing a 3-pointer with 5:27 showing that made it 68-59.

Back into double-digits the lead went until Kemp sank a 3-ball with 2:22 remaining to pull the Scots within 74-67. Chase Morgan's layup with 1:25 showing narrowed the score to 75-69, and his 3-pointer at the 1:07 mark made it a 77-72 ball game.

Kemp knocked down another 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining to make it 82-78, but that was a close at the Scots could get.

Kemp scored 28 points on 11-of-22 shooting (4-of-7 from downtown), boosting his season scoring average to 23.7. The Franklin senior added a career-high 10 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double.

Morgan scored a season-high 24 points to go with eight boards and a season-high three blocked shots. Garner chipped in 18 points, including a 4-of-9 effort from beyond the arc.

Jordan Stafford led all scorers with 29 points, pacing four Bullets in double-figures. Gettysburg outrebounded Maryville 51-39, although the Scots finished with a 14-7 edge in second-chance points.

Maryville, now 3-3, takes on Pfeiffer in Saturday's consolation game at 2 p.m. The Falcons fell to 2-2 Friday on a 96-67 defeat to host and No. 23-ranked Hampden-Sydney.
