WASHINGTON – Maryville had its best shooting day from the free throw line this season but continued to struggle shooting from the field in a 63-46 defeat to Mary Washington on Monday afternoon in the Nation's Capital.
The game served as the nightcap for Day 1 of the Jamie Lynn Roberts Fairfield Inn DC Holiday Classic, hosted by Catholic.
The Scots sank 25 of their 31 free throw attempts for a season-high 80.6 percent, but it was not enough to offset a 9-for-52 performance during live-ball action.
There were eight lead changes and six ties, with seven of the lead changes – and all six tie scores – occurring in the first quarter. The teams were knotted 16-all after 10 minutes, but Mary Washington pulled away with a 19-6 points advantage in the second quarter to lead 35-22 at intermission.
Emma Huskey came off the bench to pace Maryville with 14 points, scoring all 14 at the free throw line and setting personal career-highs for made (14) free throws and attempts (16). Her previous collegiate best was 7-of-8 at LaGrange in February 2023 and at Berea in February 2024, the latter in the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament semifinals.
Ella Haney was 5-of-6 at the line on her way to 8 points, and
Olivia Cathers was 4-of-4 en route to 6 points. Mary Washington put three in double figures, led by Megan Baxter with 16.
Maryville drops to 0-5 on the season heading into Tuesday's matchup against No. 24-ranked Catholic. The host Cardinals defeated Mount Saint Mary of New York 66-53 earlier Monday to improve to 7-1. Mary Washington improved to 5-7.
