MARYVILLE – Sewanee used a furious late rally to steal Maryville's home opener in a 68-66 decision here Monday night.
The Scots led 34-26 at halftime and stretched their lead to 52-30 with 3:49 left in the third quarter on an
Emily Allen jumper in the paint. But the visiting Tigers began their comeback by scoring 10 straight points over a 2:53 run.
Halle Kitchen converted a layup in the closing seconds of the period to keep Maryville in front 54-40 heading to the fourth.
Ella Haney sank both ends of a two-shot foul and Maryville led 65-53 with 3:46 left in the game. But the final eight possessions proved decisive: Sewanee scored on seven of those possessions and Maryville managed just a single point. The Tigers outscored Maryville 15-1 over that closing stretch, including the last 10 points of the game over the final 2:06.
Allen returned to her 2023-24 form with a season-high 20 points to lead all scorers. Last year's Collegiate Conference of the South Sixth Player of the Year finished 3-of-7 shooting from 3-point distance.
Haney and
Olivia Cathers added 12 points apiece, and Kitchen contributed a season-high seven assists.
Kadence Stoner posted a game-high nine boards and three steals.
Maryville finished with a season-high 13 steals.
The Scots (0-3) play again Dec. 11 at home against Oglethorpe (4-3). Game time is 5 p.m.
