ROME, Ga. – Maryville dropped both ends of a doubleheader against No. 3-ranked Berry on Tuesday afternoon.
The Scots pounded out 10 hits in the opener but dropped a 3-1 decision. Berry won the nightcap 10-2 in five innings.
The Scots had to be disappointed with the Game 1 result after pushing across just the one run despite their third straight game to start the season with double-figure base hits. Maryville left only six runners on base, as the Scots lost two caught stealing and another as part of a double play.
Only two of the three Berry runs were earned in that game against Scots hurler
Megan Ackerman. The senior lefty went the first five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts against just one walk.
Tia Stewart allowed just one baserunner during her one inning of work.
Maryville's lone run came in the second inning to make it a 2-1 ball game.
Emily Hill singled to left and, one out later,
Ava Whitmire reached on an infield single.
Cierra Hudson then beat out a bunt in front of the plate to load the bases.
Brecca Williams plated the run when she grounded to shortstop and beat the relay to first to prevent the inning-ending double play.
The Scots had baserunners in every inning except the third, but were never able to tie the game.
In Game 2, Maryville scored first when
Haynie Jane Gilstrap continued her fine early play with an RBI single. The hit to center field plated Williams, who had reached on an error to begin the game.
Maryville trailed 6-1 in the third when Hill delivered an RBI-single. Hill's hit scored
Sara Koonce, who also had reached on an error by the Vikings.
Gilstrap again led the way offensively with three hits in six at bats during the doubleheader. The Georgia rookie is batting .615 through her first four games and leads the team with eight hits and six RBIs.
Courtney Baine, who missed all of last season with injury, is next at .400 through three games played after she went 1-for-3 in the opener. Hill, Williams and Koonce added two hits apiece in the twin bill.
The Scots are back in action Saturday and Sunday in Memphis, taking Webster and host Rhodes both days.
