Maryville Falls to Johnson & Wales 6-3

James Smith and Villalonga Serra Show Well on Singles Courts

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Maryville competed in its second match in as many days, this time falling to Johnson & Wales 6-3 Sunday afternoon.

MC picked up its first doubles point of the season in the contest, with Jackson Meyer and James Smith picking up the victory 8-3 on the No. 1 duos court.

Smith also recorded a victory at No. 1 singles, winning his match in dominant fashion 6-1, 6-0. Smith is now 2-0 in singles play this Spring.

Gabriel Villalonga Serra recorded the third and final point for the Scots, taking his matchup on the No. 5 court 4-6, 6-4, 1-0.

Kaleb Burke picked up a set on the No. 6 court, winning the first set 6-1 before falling 2-6, 0-1 in the final two sets. All six singles won multiple games in at least one set today.

"We knew going in this would be a competitive match," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "Would like to have that lead after doubles for momentum and just needing 3 more match wins. Singles was a good battle. I was really proud of Villa (Villalonga Serra) for his performance, and it felt like he took a big step forward."

"There were encouraging signs out there but at the end of the day we need to keep working on doubles and get that lead."

Maryville is on the road Saturday for its first CCS competition of the spring. The Scots will face off against Belhaven in Jackson, Mississippi. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Central.
