Scots Blitz Short-Handed Blazers 8-1

McRae Claims First Collegiate Victory at No. 4 Singles

JACKSON, Miss. – Maryville claimed its first Collegiate Conference of the South victory with an 8-1 defeat of short-handed Belhaven on Saturday.

The Blazers competed with just four players, but Maryville was able to win five of the six matches played to take match without factoring in the three forfeit victories.

Mia Brown and Elizabeth Shwaiko handled things at No. 1doubles in an 8-4 victory, with Abby Diggs and Alyssa Smith posting an 8-2 win at the No. 2 position.

In singles, Katelyn Cook continued her fine play with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph, and Brown rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) decision at No. 3 singles. Josie McRae at No. 4 singles won for the first time in a Scots uniform, taking down her opponent 6-1, 6-3.

"Great job by our women taking care of business in doubles today," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "Since they had only four players, it meant we clinched the match, but we went into the singles mentally as if the team match was still in the balance.

"Katelyn has been playing well, and congratulations to Josie on her first win!"

It's Maryville second straight victory, lifting the overall record to 3-2 and the spring mark to 2-1. The Scots stay in Jackson to take on Millsaps (1-6) on Sunday. Start time is 11 a.m. Central.
