Maryville Extends Winning Streak to Four Against Brevard

Scots Sweep Doubles Competition to Down Tornados

MARYVILLE – Maryville continued its winning ways Wednesday afternoon, picking up its fourth straight victory over Brevard 5-4 at the MC Tennis Courts.

The Scots kicked off the match with a bang, sweeping the Tornados 3-0 in doubles competition, before clinching the match with two more victories on the singles courts.

James Smith and Jackson Meyer picked up their sixth consecutive win at No. 1 doubles, defeating their opponents 8-5. Kaleb Burke and Jonathan Crane followed up on the No. 2 court, taking their match by a score of 8-1. Seth Green and Gabriel Villalonga Serra wrapped up the Scots duos' scoring, winning their match 8-5 at No. 3.

Villalonga Serra and Green picked up the Scots decisive singles victories, recording points on the No. 4 and No. 5 courts, respectively. Villalonga Serra defeated Noah Lewis 6-3, 6-1 while Green downed David Hoyle 6-3, 6-2.

The Scots narrowly missed out on two more victories at No. 1 and No.3 singles, as Smith and Meyer both fell in three-set tiebreaker finishes. Smith fell 61-76, 6-4, 1-0 (13-11) at No. 1 while Meyer dropped his match 6-0, 5-7, 0-1 (11-9).

"Personally, I love seeing a doubles sweep that ends up deciding the match for us," head coach Doug Corbett said. "Sure, you'd like to win those tight super breakers, but those can go either way and we just need to work on a few things.

"Shout out to Biel (Villalonga Serra) for his first doubles win! Biel and Seth with 2 wins each today."

Two Collegiate Conference of the South matches remain – both at home – and they are against last year's CCS tournament finalists. The Scots host defending champion Piedmont this Sunday at 10 a.m. and they host Covenant the next Saturday, April 20, at 2 p.m.
