MARYVILLE – Maryville fought like mad at the top two doubles positions but could not scratch out a victory and lost 9-0 to Piedmont here Sunday.
The visiting Lions secured their 17th victory of the season to set a program record and snapped Maryville's four-match winning streak in the process. The Scots dropped to 3-2 in the Collegiate Conference of the South and 5-13 overall, while Piedmont improved to 17-6 and 5-0.
Maryville is in fourth place in the CCS standings with one match remaining.
Jackson Meyer and
James Smith worked their top-shelf Piedmont opponents to an 8-5 decision at No. 1 doubles, and
Kaleb Burke and
Jonathan Crane played to the same score at the No. 2 position. Burke at No. 6 singles fell in a third-set tiebreaker, losing 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4).
Seth Green at No. 5 singles lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 for a solid showing there. And
Gabriel Villalonga Serra dropped his match 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 position, while Smith at No. 1 singles lost 6-4, 6-1.
Maryville closes the regular season Saturday at home against Covenant. Start time is 2 p.m.
