Winning Streaks ‘Can’t Last Forever’

Maryville Falls 6-3 to Brevard for First Loss in Month

MARYVILLE – Three tough 50-50 matches all went Brevard's way and the Tornados escaped with a 6-3 decision over Maryville here Wednesday afternoon.

The loss ended Maryville's eight-match winning streak dating to March 11.

The Scots broke on top by taking two of the three doubles matches. After Brevard prevailed at the No. 3 court, Katelyn Cook and Elizabeth Shwaiko improved to 7-1 together with an 8-4 triumph at No. 1. Then Abby Diggs and Alyssa Smith won their 10th straight match with an 8-5 victory at No. 2.

Brevard won singles matches at Nos. 1 and later No. 6, with Maryville taking the No. 2 court behind Shwaiko in a 6-4, 6-2 outcome. But it was the matches at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 that told the story of this day. All three were close and all three went Brevard's way on the scoreboard.

Match Hinged on Just a Few Points
First, Cook lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3, followed by Diggs falling 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 5 and finally Smith dropping her match 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 4 position. Turn any two of those matches around and Maryville's winning streak marches on.

"It was a great streak we had going," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "Those can't last forever, and we need the strong competition to help us prepare for the conference tourney.

"Even though they came up short, Alyssa and Diggs battled admirably, and I am proud of them."

Two Collegiate Conference of the South matches remain – both at home – and they are against last year's CCS tournament finalists. The Scots host defending champion Piedmont this Sunday at 10 a.m. and they host Covenant the next Saturday, April 20, at 2 p.m.
