Maryville Wraps 2024 Season

Scots Finish 5-15 Overall, 3-3 in CCS Play

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Maryville's season came to an end Thursday afternoon with a 5-3 loss to Huntingdon in the opening round of the CCS Championship Tournament at the Chattanooga Champions Club.

Maryville kicked off the match on the right foot, with James Smith and Jackson Meyer winning at No. 1 doubles 8-2. The Hawks came back though to take matches on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts, positioning themselves with a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Smith, who was honored as a member of the All-Conference Second Team shortly before the match began, continued his strong play, picking up a victory at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Jonathan Crane picked up the only other point for MC in the contest. The Scots All-Sportsmanship honoree recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory on the No. 2 court.

"It was a great battle to the end the season that was probably decided by not getting the doubles lead," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "I am proud of our fight, and we are excited about the additions coming in the future."

Maryville put together strong matches despite the loss. At No. 5 singles, Seth Green battled to a second-set tiebreaker, falling 6-2, 77-63. Gabriel Villalonga Serra at No. 4 Singles was in the middle of a back-and-forth 7-5, 5-5 matchup that was left unfinished after Huntingdon secured its fifth point.

"Before we close the book, I want to say how proud I am of Seth Green," Corbett said. "His game changed phenomenally over our 3 years with him! That was undoubtedly thanks to his hard work and determination every single day. We will miss having his energy very much. Looking forward to seeing what he does in the years to come."

The Scots finished the season with an overall record of 5-15, finishing fourth in the CCS with an even 3-3 record in conference play.
