Scots Make It 7 Straight!

Maryville Handles CCS Foe Huntingdon 8-1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Maryville extended its winning streak to seven on Saturday with a convincing 8-1 victory against Huntingdon.

The Scots did not need a tiebreaker or a third set in improving to 10-5 overall and 4-0 in the Collegiate Conference of the South. Huntingdon dropped to 2-3 and 1-1.

Huntingdon had just five available players, so Maryville pocketed one doubles forfeit and one singles forfeit before play even began. Maryville made it a clean sweep in doubles with first Abby Diggs and Alyssa Smith winning 8-2 at No. 2 and Katelyn Cook and Elizabeth Shwaiko prevailing 8-5 at the No. 1 spot.

For Diggs and Smith, it was the duo's ninth straight doubles victory together.

Diggs and Mia Brown both improved their singles winning streak to six. Brown at No. 3 singles won 6-0, 6-3, and Diggs at No. 4 prevailed 6-0, 6-2. Considering the No. 6 singles forfeit, and a Hawks win at No. 1 singles, the Scots put the match away with victories at Nos. 2 and 5.

At No. 2 singles, Katelyn Cook rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 triumph. Then Alyssa Smith at No. 5 was a 6-4, 6-1 winner for her fourth consecutive singles win.

"We came into Saturday's match with a bit of a chip on our shoulder," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "The women responded well and continued their strong play in doubles. We are excited for the challenges ahead in these last few matches."

Maryville wraps up its southern swing with a Sunday match at LaGrange. Start time is noon. The Scots are home Wednesday against Brevard in the makeup of a match rained out March 6.
