Scots Wrap MC Fall Classic With Draw Against Westfield State

Maryville ties Owls 2-2 on Day 2 of Classic Tournament

MARYVILLE – Another Day, another late-night contest that concluded with a 2-2 draw for Maryville

It was déjà vu for the Scots Saturday night, as they played Westfield State to a 2-2 tie in a game that began well after the scheduled 7:30 p.m. start time due to weather delays before the start of the match.

This result comes just a day after Maryville played to the same score against Bridgewater (Va.) Friday night. The Scots are now 0-0-2 on the season after opening the year as the host of the Maryville College Fall Classic.

The Scots and Owls traded each traded goals in the middle of the match. All four goals were scored within a span of 22 minutes late in the first half and early in the second. The three second-half goals all came in a span of eight minutes.

The Scots kicked off the scoring with a goal by Chloe Chase in the 34th minute, her first of the year. The Scots held that lead through the end of the half, taking a 1-0 lead into the final 45 minutes.

The Owls wasted no time tying it up in the second half, evening it up in the 48th minute with a goal by Delaney Parker.

Just three minutes later, in the 51st minute, last year's leading goal scorer (12) Sierra Lee took back the lead with her first goal of the season. Katie Corley recorded an assist on the score.

Just five minutes after the Scots took the lead, Katie Slattery's 56th-minute goal tied the game 2-2, where it would remain until the end of the game.

The Scots had three great opportunities late in the game, with shots from Smoot, Anne Marie Konieczny (87th minute), and Madison McDonald (89th minute), barely missing the back of the net. Both Smoot and Konieczny's shots bounded off the top woodwork, and right woodwork, respectively.

Westfield State outshot Maryville 13-10 overall and 7-5 on shots on goal, but Maryville's goalkeeper Sydney Mahr saved five shots to the Owls three. The Scots also held the advantage on corner kicks 3-1.

The squad has a week off before heading to Lookout Mountain Georgia, for another tournament, hosted by Covenant. The Scots will face off against Centre on Friday and Bob Jones on Saturday. Friday's match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
