DANVILLE, Ky. – It took until the final play, but Centre evened the score for the Southern Athletic Association against Maryville this season with a walk-off 17-14 decision Saturday night in Kentucky.
Maryville's defense had bottled up the Colonels for most of the evening, allowing just 55 total yards on 31 plays heading into the final drive.
But with the game on the line, Centre produced a 16-play, 78-yard march that set up Cam Tegge for the winning 32-yard field goal as time expired. The Colonels chalked up four of their nine first downs for the game in that final drive.
Maryville had the ball twice in the fourth quarter with the score 14-14, starting at its own 35-yard line with 11:43 remaining and then again at the Centre 45 with 8:56 showing. Both drives ended in punts, with Centre taking over the latter boot and running out the final 6:56 of game time.
The Scots tied the score with 13:31 remaining when
Bryson Rollins found
Steph Carter Jr., for an 8-yard touchdown pass. Carter for the game posted career highs with seven catches for 144 yards.
Rollins finished 23-of-36 passing for 310 yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions. He was sacked five times, with one of those causing a fumble that Centre returned 50 yards for a tying TD in the second quarter.
Ninth 300-Yard Game for Rollins
For Rollins, it was his ninth career 300-yard passing game and it improved his all-time passing yardage total to 5,909. He also took over the career passing attempts lead from Pat Moyer, who had 730 from 1981-85. Rollins is now 454-of-738 (61.5) for 5,909 yards and 46 touchdowns. All four of those career passing categories – attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns – now belong in the Maryville records book to the junior from Elizabethton.
Jaden Jones continued to shine for the Scots, contributing six receptions for 65 yards while
Brock Skelton had three for 55. It was Skelton who scored the first touchdown of the game, hauling in a 34-yard pass from Rollins early in the second quarter. Centre tied it on the long fumble return and it was 7-all at the half.
Centre took the lead in the third quarter, needing to cover just 30 yards after Tayden Mounivong set the Colonels up with a 40-yard punt return. Seven plays later, Centre quarterback Jack Gohmann found Carter Chandler for a 5-yard TD pass in the corner of the end zone for a 14-7 lead.
Maryville tied the score on the ensuing possession, going 86 yards in 20 plays and taking 9:26 off the clock before Rollins found Carter for the 8-yard strike.
White Leads Another Stout Defense
Jonathan Harris led the Scots with six tackles. He and
Jordan Lacey had the two Maryville sacks.
Kial Cottingham contributed his second collegiate interception, while
Grant Henderson had four pass breakups.
Centre (2-0), which was picked to finish third in the SAA, improved its series lead over Maryville to 37-30-1. The 68 meetings are second on the all-time MC chart, trailing only the 72 against Emory & Henry.
Maryville at 1-1 is back on the road next Saturday at Southern Virginia in a 1 p.m. start. The Knights are 0-2 after losing this week at Bridgewater.
