MARYVILLE – Oglethorpe grabbed second-half momentum and posted a 3-0 decision over Maryville here Friday night.
After a scoreless 65 minutes, the Stormy Petrels scored three times in a 21-minute span. J.R. Cozine scored his first of the season to break the ice in the 66th minute, taking a pass from J.P. Devine, turning and slotting home from a left-footed strike from just inside the penalty area.
Maryville's defense kept the game 1-0 until the 80th minute, when Chris Veglia scored his first of the season when he was on the spot for a rebound of a free kick that caromed off the right-hand goal post. Adrian Levy took the free kick and was denied by a splendid save from
Christian Alcaraz.
Levy tallied his own goal seven minutes later after teammate Javier Aponte stole the ball in the offensive end and passed ahead. Levy took one dribble and fired into the left corner from 18 yards away for his fifth goal of the season.
Alcarez, Biger Combined for Eight Saves
Oglethorpe held a 28-3 shots advantage, and none of the Maryville shot attempts were on net. Alcaraz posted six saves and reserve goalkeeper
Alon Biger registered two saves over his final 9:25 of game action. Corner kicks favored the Stormy Petrels 10-1, as did possession by a 69 percent to 31 percent margin.
Craig McIlwraith,
Brady Hammer and
Ben Slay got the shots off for Maryville.
The Scots are now 2-4-2, while Oglethorpe is 2-1-4. These two teams are slated to be conference foes beginning in 2026 when Maryville joins the Southern Athletic Association.
Maryville plays again Sunday, hosting another future SAA foe in Centre for a 2 p.m. kick at the MC Soccer Complex.
