MARYVILLE – Maryville hosted its first spring invitational Friday and Saturday, competing both at the MC Tennis Courts and at John Sevier Park in the Maryville College Invitational.
The Scots won 9 of their 17 matches across the two-day event, facing off against Johnson, Truett McConnell, and Brevard players.
MC was swept in doubles play on Friday, but won three of its five singles matches.
"The women were able to bounce back from a tough first day to go a combined 6-3 on Day 2," Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett said. "We are just scratching the surface on doubles strategy, as half our team are freshmen.
"Lots of feedback was gained for our student-athletes. They need to rest and study up, then go to work in the offseason."
Elizabeth Shwaiko kicked it off with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Jasmine Muecke followed up with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over her opponent from Johnson. Maryville's final win on Day 1 came from
Lilly Patterson, who picked up victory 6-1, 6-2.
On Saturday, Maryville won six of its nine matches, including two of the three doubles contests.
The duo of Shwaiko and
Calliana Kondolios picked up a doubles victory 7-5 while Patterson and Muecke downed their opponents 6-1.
Shwaiko,
Alyssa Smith,
Abby Diggs, and Kondolios recorded singles victories for the Scots on Saturday.
"Hosting our first invitational was an awesome experience," Corbett said. "We had been waiting to get our courts redone before we hosted, but now we plan to host one every year in the fall going forward."
The invitational marked the conclusion of the Maryville fall season. The Scots return to action Feb. 21 against Pfeiffer to kick off the Spring season.
