Freshman Four!

Scots Blank Greensboro Behind Four First-Year Goals

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryville returned to the win column in fine fashion Monday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout at Greensboro.

Both teams entered with two victories in 2024, but it was the Scots who came to play on the Greensboro artificial turf. All four Maryville goals were scored by first-year Scots, led by two from Brady Hammer. Uli Quinones and Ethan Denney later scored their first goals of the campaign as Maryville posted a season-high in goals.

"It was great to see a complete win on the road against a good program," Maryville head coach Pepe Fernandez said. "I'm not sure how many times we have had a four-goal game and four freshmen scored! So that was special."

Hammer, a Knoxville product, tallied first when he took a long crossing pass from Collin Combs off the short-hop and headed it home just inside the near post in the 16th minute. Maryville led 1-0 at halftime.

Maryville's second goal was like the first. This time, Hammer's corner kick bounced, and Quinones timed his header perfectly from about 4 yards out into an open netting to make it 2-0 in the 76th minute. Quinones is a Maryville native.

That goal opened the floodgates for the Scots, who scored twice more in the next 11 minutes.

Team Leader with Three Goals
Hammer scored his second of the match and third of the season in the 81st minute when Brooklyn Muccillo claimed a loose ball and fired ahead to his streaking teammate. Hammer on the run lifted his shot over the goalkeeper's head, off the crossbar and into the net from 20 yards away.

Denney scored Maryville's fourth goal in the 87th minute. The San Diego product took a pass from Combs, spun and fired low into the right portion of the net from about 12 yards away.

The Scots owned a 26-6 edge in shots and held ball possession for 61 percent of the time. Eleven Maryville shots were on target, led by three each from Hammer and Denney. Christian Alcarez made one save in lifting his season record to 3-3-1.

Maryville, now 3-5-2, came into Monday's contest with eight goals scored across nine matches, but none over the last three. This lifts the team scoring average to 1.2. Greensboro's record falls to 2-7-1.

The Scots open Collegiate Conference of the South action Saturday against Belhaven (3-1-3) in a 2 p.m. start. It is the first match of a twin bill between both programs on Parents & Family Weekend for Maryville College.
