JACKSON, Miss.—Maryville's resilience was on full display Sunday. The Scots dropped a tough 3-1 decision to Belhaven before rallying to defeat Piedmont by the same score.
The lone win for the Scots against Belhaven came in the second set. Maryville led from the start, with the Bruins fighting back to force three ties.
Sets 3 and 4 were competitive for Maryville, finishing 25-21 and 25-23. The third set saw four lead changes, while the fourth featured nine.
Set 1 was a 25-14 decision.
Katelyn Eldred was the star of the first match recording eight service aces and 27 digs. Eldred added to her impressive stat line with six aces and 22 digs in the second match.
"Kate had a great weekend," Scots Head Coach
Brienna Laskowski said. "She goes unnoticed sometimes but if you really pay attention, she's the reason we have so many great offensive opportunities."
Frisch Fuels Scots in Second Match
Landry Frisch helped MC rebound with 20 kills, posting a .405 attack line. Frisch also had two aces and six digs.
"Landry played well in the second match, bouncing back from a tougher first game," Laskowski said. "She took her frustration and translated it into offensive firepower, and was great for us."
Maryville edged out a 26-24 win in Set 1, dropped the second set 25-21, and then dominated the next two by scores of 25-13 and 25-10.
MC falls to 2-1 in conference play, bringing the team's overall record to 8-6. The Scots return home Tuesday for a rematch against Berea. They host Faculty and Staff Night in a 6 p.m. start.
