Maryville Emerges Victorious in The Battle of Scots

Defensive Intensity Lifts Maryville Over Covenant

Defensive Intensity; The difference between close wins and losses. 

The Garnet Clad Scots held Covenant to 28% from the field, and forced 21 turnovers on eight steals in the 59-53 victory. 

Streaky
While the game remained close throughout, both teams had spurts of of streaky-ness. The largest lead for the Maryville was 13 with 4:49 left to go (56-43). The Blue covered Scots proceeded to rally off 10 straight points to make it a three-point game with 1:30 remaining, but would not score again. MC led for a total of 31 minutes and only trailed for eight. Both teams went on 10-0 runs in the game, but Covenant's largest lead of the game came in the second quarter when they led 25-20.

When Maryville needed their defense to lock in the most, they did, shutting down the 10-0 Covenant run and hitting three of their final four free-throws to seal the game.

600 For Haney
Ella Haney was the leading scorer for the Maryville on the night, with 12 points and six rebounds. Haney's scoring effort put her over 200 points on the season and over 600 in her career. She is averaging 12.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game this season. Ella Tharpe was the other Scot in double digits with 10 points and two rebounds on the night. The leading rebounder on the night was Emma Huskey who hauled in seven while also scoring nine. She is fifth in the conference in total rebounds and fourth in offensive rebounds (total & per game).

Covenant's Breezy Savage was the game's high scorer with 13 points and three rebounds, and added three assists to her stat line as well. 

With the win, Maryville improves to 4-3 in conference play, good for fourth place in the conference, and Covenant falls to 5-4 in CCS play and 9-8 overall. MC heads out on the road now for games at Wesleyan (Friday), Agnes Scott (2/1), and Piedmont (2/4).
