Women's Soccer Falls in Shootout in CCS Semifinal to Asbury

The Eagles Advanced after hitting 4 PKs to The Scots 3

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Maryville College women's soccer team showed heart on Tuesday night, playing 110+ minutes of intense postseason soccer before falling to Asbury University in a penalty-kick shootout following a 1-1 draw at the MC Soccer Complex.

The matchup had all the drama of a tournament classic — lead changes, near misses, and momentum swings that kept the home crowd of 376 on its feet. The Scots struck first in the 62nd minute when Senior forward Avery Brown finished from close range to give Maryville the advantage.

Asbury answered just over ten minutes later with a goal from Emily Carpenter, and the teams traded chances throughout the second half. Maryville had an opportunity to regain the lead minutes later with a penalty kick, but Asbury's goalkeeper made the save to keep it level.

Despite the late twists, the Scots continued to push forward through two overtime periods, playing disciplined, composed soccer and showcasing the team chemistry that carried them through the season.

The match went to penalties, where Madison McDonald, Katie Cotten, and Sadie Phelan converted their attempts for the Scots, but Asbury ultimately advanced 4–3 in the shootout.

Maryville goalkeeper Kristen Burns anchored a strong defensive effort, while Brown's second-half goal capped a season of steady growth for the Scots' young attacking unit.

The Scots close the year with a 9-7-1 overall record and a 7-1 mark in conference play, continuing their upward trajectory under Coach Jon Baker. With a deep and talented returning group, Maryville heads into the offseason with confidence and optimism for what's ahead.
