Women's Basketball Falls to Catholic in Day One of Nelson Hinson Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Maryville College women's basketball team dropped a non-conference matchup to Catholic University on Friday evening, falling 67–46 inside the Freeman Center.

The Scots moved to 3-4 on the season, while the Cardinals improved to 7-3 overall.

Kadence Stoner led Maryville offensively, finishing with eight points on an efficient 4-of-5 shooting from the field while adding seven rebounds and one block. Leighan Jackson also contributed eight points off the bench, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor. Chloe Powell and Terriah Watkins each added six points, while Maryville received 27 points from its bench unit.

Maryville shot 38.2 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from beyond the arc, while holding an edge on the glass with 34 total rebounds. The Scots scored 32 points in the paint and added 10 second-chance points in the contest.

Catholic jumped out to an early lead, using an aggressive first quarter to build a 20–6 advantage after one. Maryville responded in the second quarter, shooting 58.3 percent from the field in the period and matching the Cardinals point-for-point to go into halftime trailing 37–23.

The Scots continued to battle in the third quarter, with baskets from Ella Haney, Emily Wilson, and Watkins helping Maryville keep pace. However, Catholic extended its lead behind strong transition play and interior scoring, taking a 57–37 advantage into the final quarter.

Maryville continued to compete defensively in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a block from Stoner and steady bench production, but Catholic maintained control down the stretch to secure the 67–46 decision.

Maryville is back in action tomorrow at 1:00 PM to take on the non-advancing team of the Christopher Newport vs. York College matchup.
