Men's Basketball Falls to #16 Hampden-Sydney

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Maryville men's basketball team fell to Hampden-Sydney, 63–55, in a non-conference matchup Monday afternoon at the Woodruff PE Center.

The Scots moved to 9–3 overall, while the Tigers improved to 7–3 on the season.

Matthew Schneider led Maryville offensively with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting, adding five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Chase Morgan followed with 14 points, five rebounds, three steals, and three blocks, while Jackson Garner contributed eight points and three rebounds. Jaylon Green provided a spark off the bench with eight points on efficient shooting.

Maryville shot 32.3 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from beyond the arc, while going 63.6 percent from the free-throw line. The Scots found success attacking the paint, scoring 24 points inside, and capitalized on fast-break opportunities with nine points in transition.

Maryville struck first behind early baskets from Morgan, Garner, and Schneider, using transition opportunities to establish an early presence inside. The Scots briefly took the lead before Hampden-Sydney responded with a stretch of efficient shooting to swing momentum. The Tigers capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities, building a steady advantage as the half progressed.

Despite defensive pressure from Javi Rosell and a spark off the bench from Green, the Scots struggled to find a consistent offensive rhythm as Hampden-Sydney extended its lead with timely three-point shooting. Schneider and Garner helped stabilize the Scots late in the half, but the Tigers closed on a run to carry a 41–26 advantage into the locker room.

The Scots opened the second half with renewed energy, chipping away at the deficit with strong play on both ends of the floor. Collin Smith converted inside, while Morgan attacked the rim and knocked down key free throws to pull Maryville closer. A three-pointer from Garner and another finish in the paint by Schneider trimmed the deficit to single digits, forcing Hampden-Sydney to call a timeout.

Maryville continued to pressure defensively, creating turnovers and converting in transition to stay within striking distance. Free throws from Garner and a late three by Green cut the lead to eight with under a minute remaining, but Hampden-Sydney answered with composure at the line and a final basket inside to seal the contest.

The Scots are back in action tomorrow at 2:00 PM, taking on Bates College to wrap up their time at the Emory Holiday Classic.
