Scots Tame Scotties 80-53

DECATUR, Ga. - Maryville set the tone early in their thumping of Agnes Scott. 

While the Scots let the Scotties score the first bucket of the game, going down 3-0, MC then went on a 17-0 run and start the game up 21-5 through the first 6:44 of the contest on their way to an 80-53 victory.

The Scots finished out the first quarter up 29-9, which is the most points scored in a quarter for the team since Feb. 2, 2024, against LaGrange (30). Their 48 points at the half were the second most this season (scored 49 against Warren Wilson).

Starting Lineups

Maryville also matched its season-high mark for threes knocked down with six and had its second-highest field goal percentage, at 52.6%. Emily Allen led the charge on deep shooting, going a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc. Braxton Fritz knocked down two threes on 60% shooting overall. Junior Forward Olivia Cathers scored 14 points on 7-10 shooting in the game, which is the second-highest total of her career (15 is her high mark, also against Agnes Scott). Sophomore Ella Tharpe had 13 for the Scots, marking her sixth game in a row with double-digit points. Over that stretch the Scots are 5-1 and she is averaging 13.8 ppg.

MC shared the ball extremely well in the game, adding 22 assists on 30 made shots. Halle Kitchen racked up 8 assists to lead the team in this category. Their 22 assists are the second-most for the team this season. The Scots out-rebounded the Scotties 41-26 and had 10 second-change points.

The feisty Scots also forced 29 turnovers and had 17 steals, adding up to 22 points off turnovers. The 17 steals are the most in a game for MC since Jan. 26th of last year, when they had 19 steals, also against Agnes Scott. 

The largest lead for Maryville came in the third period up by 35 with 3:38 to go. Agnes Scott outscored the Scots by six in the fourth quarter, leading to the 27-point victory for Maryville. 

Coaching The Team

Maryville has now won four games in a row and improved to 7-11 overall and 6-3 in CCS play, good for solo third in the conference behind first-place Asbury and second-place Piedmont.

Next up for the Scots is a trip to Piedmont on Tuesday. Piedmont lost Saturday at Belhaven and has now dropped two of its last three games. The Lions defeated Maryville in the first meeting between the two earlier this season 73-57.
