Maryville Drops Pair in Atlanta

Scots Lose to Emory, LaGrange at Emory Classic; Same Schedule Sunday

ATLANTA – Maryville suffered a double defeat by varying degrees on Day 1 of the Emory Classic.

The host Eagles scored twice Saturday in the bottom of the seventh to rally past the Scots 6-5 in Maryville's first game of the day. Then LaGrange rolled to a 10-1 decision that was called by the run-rule in the sixth inning.

Maryville took a 5-2 lead over Emory thanks to a five-run fourth inning. Kaylee Peyret plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, followed by Jessica Harris knocking home a pair with a single to center. Paige Dickinson also had an RBI single for the Scots.

But Emory clawed back with two runs in the home half of the fourth before Maryville starting pitcher Tia Stewart halted the rally.

Stewart pitched into the seventh inning when Emory reached her for a single and a double to open the frame. Sydney Dickinson came on for Stewart but allowed a base hit and a wild pitch for the two runs the Eagles needed to secure the win.

Stewart (1-1) allowed six runs on 11 hits over her six-plus innings of work, taking her first loss of the season. Brecca Williams and Ryleigh Maples both went 2-for-4 for the visitors.

In the second game, Maryville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Williams singled and came around on an RBI single by Olivia Harris. But that's all the Scots could muster as they were outhit by their Collegiate Conference of the South foes 10-7.

LaGrange scored four runs in the second and three more in the fourth to pull away. Zoe Veres belted a two-run homer to left field to provide the final Panther runs.

Williams and Olivia Harris had a pair of hits each for the Scots, who dropped to 1-3. Emory defeated LaGrange 8-1 earlier in the day to open its season 2-0. LaGrange is now 2-4. This weekend's games against LaGrange do not count toward the conference standings.

The Scots are back in action Sunday against these same two teams. Maryville takes on Emory at 10 a.m. and LaGrange at noon.
