SALEM, Va. – Maryville fought through adversity on their way to a 4-3 victory over Roanoke.
After suffering an Ankle injury in her singles match yesterday, Senior
Abby Diggs was able to go today in doubles, winning with partner
Alyssa Smith 6-4. The Scots were able to take the doubles point with
Jasmine Muecke and
Josie McRae's win at the #3 position. Those two pairings are undefeated on the year in doubles matches.
"Tremendous effort from the girls to beat a team of this caliber with only 5 players in singles," Coach Corbett said. "The doubles proved to be the difference, and we are thankful to Diggs for battling an ankle injury today."
On the singles side of things, the Scots fielded only five players and had to forfeit the #6 spot.
Despite that, Maryville came out with three victories to secure the 4-3 win over the Maroons.
Senior
Elizabeth Shwaiko took down Roanoke's Lia Streibich in three sets 6-0, 2-6, and 10-6.
"Elizabeth's had a big time win in singles today against a strong player she lost to last year." Coach continued. "Her improvement over the years has been remarkable."
Alyssa Smith was victorious at the #3 spot, winning 6-4, 7-5. She is undefeated on the year at 3-0.
Freshman Calliana kondolios remained undefeated on the year as well, taking her match 6-2, 6-3 to finalize the victory for the Scots. She is now 2-0 at the #4 spot.
"This was a great day for Scot tennis"
Maryville finishes their road series tomorrow morning against Southern Virginia. This will be SVU's first contest of the season.
