After an impressive first-quarter effort saw them up by six, Maryville couldn't quite match the Piedmont pace and eventually faltered 67-52.
The Scots built up a nice 12-6 lead after the first period ended.
Emma Huskey garnered six of the team's points in the quarter and amassed 16 points on the night to lead the team. She also led the team in rebounding with six. Those 16 points are her second-most this season (18 is her season and career high). No other Scot scored in double figures, but
Ella Haney scored nine, and
Emily Allen and
Ella Tharpe both had eight.

In a fire-drill situation Tuesday night with Maryville suddenly trailing Piedmont 74-72 and the clock tick-tick-ticking toward triple zeroes,
Jamal Ware took a fast-break pass from
Javi Rosell and pulled up for a 3-pointer at the top of the key. The shot swished through like a dagger with 0:00.8 to spare, and Maryville escaped with an incredible 75-74 road triumph.
"I had a time out left, but I was just like, you know, if I call time out, they can set up that zone," Scots head coach
Raul Placeres said of the closing seconds. "Sometimes you just want your guys to be able to play freely and loosely there at the end, and big-shot Jamal does it again.
"It's no longer
out of no-Ware. It's
you better know 'Ware' he is!"
Reed Kemp's 23 points marked his 10th straight game of 20 or more points. He has scored 972 points in a Maryville uniform, and his four-year NCAA total stands at 1,129. Placeres also earned collegiate victory No. 94 against 41 losses.
Huntingdon has won seven of their last nine outings of the season, but most recently fell to Belhaven on Tuesday night 71-67. The Scots defeated the Hawks 80-77 back on Jan. 18, and have won 11 straight in the series dating back to 2020. Huntingdon sits at 5-2 in CCS play, good for third place just below second place Maryville and first place Belhaven. The Hawks are averaging 85.5 points per game this season, while the Scots are scoring 81.5.
