After dropping the doubles point, Maryville came back to win the match against Roanoke 4-3 thanks to singles wins from
James Smith,
Luka Romano,
Jonathan Crane, and
Gabriel Villalonga Serra.
"After the early deficit, I really like the way we responded and battled in the singles," Corbett said. "The mindset was pretty strong overall, so I could tell there was a realistic chance to get back in the match. Luka had an incredible comeback down 5-0 in the 2nd set. That is a perfect example of the never-giving attitude that we want to build on."
Maryville is 3-0 on the young season while SVU is 0-1.

Maryville fought through adversity on their way to a 4-3 victory over Roanoke.
After suffering an Ankle injury in her singles match yesterday, Senior
Abby Diggs was able to go today in doubles, winning with partner
Alyssa Smith 6-4. The Scots were able to take the doubles point with
Jasmine Muecke and
Josie McRae's win at the #3 position. Those two pairings are undefeated on the year in doubles matches.
"Tremendous effort from the girls to beat a team of this caliber with only 5 players in singles," Coach Corbett said. "The doubles proved to be the difference, and we are thankful to Diggs for battling an ankle injury today."
This will be SVU's first match of the year, while the Scots sit at 2-1.
Baseball
1:00 p.m. & 4:30 p.m. | Hanover & Oglethorpe | Scotland Yard

It felt like 2024 at Scotland Yard last Sunday as
Ashton Whiteaker belted a line drive over the left-center field wall to secure the win and a sweep for the Maryville Scots against Oberlin. Whiteaker has not missed a beat since helping Maryville win the conference title just eight months ago. The Scots catcher is batting fourth on the team with a .353 average and a 1.206 OPS, six games into his senior campaign.
"Having 'Whit's' (Whiteaker)'s presence in the dugout is big," Scots head baseball coach
Clint Helton said. "He's not much of a talker, but how he carries himself speaks volumes. He loves competing and being challenged."
Oglethorpe defeated Hanover 14-8 yesterday in the first event of the Scots Invitational. The Stormy Petrels are 4-4 on the season while the Panthers are 3-2. Maryville comes into this weekend's match ups at a perfect 6-0.
Softball
2:30 p.m. & 5:00 p.m. | Rhodes & Roanoke | MC Softball Complex

Last time out, Maryville suffered a tough day of softball at the Emory Classic.
Host Emory defeated the Scots 8-0 in five innings, and then LaGrange posted a 6-1 decision on its conference rival in games that will not count toward the conference standings. Emory scored five runs in the first and three more in the third.
Campbell White in the top of the third inning managed the only Maryville base hit, a one-out single to center. The host Eagles (4-0) outhit Maryville 7-1. In Game 2, LaGrange junior pitcher Claire Chamberlain pitched a four-hitter and drove in three runs. LaGrange scored twice in the first, third and fifth innings. Maryville's only run came in the bottom of the first when
Brecca Williams and
Paige Dickinson singled with one out and
Olivia Harris drove Williams in with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Rhodes comes into the Maryville College Classic sitting at 1-7 on the year, while Roanoke is 1-1. Maryville sits at 1-5 with their lone victory coming against #15 Berry in the opening game of the season.

Raul Placeres won his 100th game Friday night as head coach of the Maryville Scots. And yet he wants one more.
Reed Kemp scored 30 points in the 91-73 CCS Tournament Semifinal victory over Asbury. It was his fifth consecutive game with 30 or more points and during the game he broke Maryville's record for points in a season – a record that had stood for 53 years! And yet he wants 30 more. The Scots are in the CCS Men's Basketball Tournament Championship Game for the third year in a row, and yet Saturday's 3 p.m. tip against Huntingdon is miles bigger than the previous two banners they have raised.
Because this one carries the magic ticket: Automatic entry into the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. Not since 2019 have the Scots graced the NCAA tourney, but Placeres and Co. are putting it all on the line Saturday against a Huntingdon squad that does not want its Cinderella season to end.
