ORLANDO, Fla. - The Scots defeated Emerson in dramatic fashion 4-3 in their last match of the Spring Break trip to Florida.
Doubles
The doubles point proved critical in the victory for Maryville, with the Scots winning the point after dropping the first match. The duo of
Calliana Kondolios and
Elizabeth Shwaiko were the two to secure the doubles point, defeating Emerson's Miner and Stinson 6-4. The pair is now 2-3 on the year together.
Abby Diggs, overcoming an injured ankle, put in an incredible effort to help her team secure the other doubles match at the #2 spot alongside
Alyssa Smith. The pair defeated Briones and Jones from Emerson 6-2.
"The win was made possible thanks to the doubles point," Coach Corbett said "We are happy that Diggs was able to get in some Spring break tennis, and it was a difference maker"
Diggs and Smith improved to 4-2 together on the year and 3-1 at the #2 spot, while Shwaiko and Kondolios earned their second victory together, and first at the #1 position.
Solo Action
Singles competition started slow for the Scots, losing two of their first three matches.
Court #5 finished first with team newcomer
Ella Reyes falling 6-0, 6-4. Court two was next to wrap up with Smith falling 6-1, 6-2. Shwaiko came away with the first victory for MC in singles, winning her match at the #1 position 6-1, 6-1.
The Scots needed the freshman to step up big time in order for the team to earn the victory, and that is what they did.
"It certainly was a dramatic ending, with two freshmen bringing us back from down 2-3." Corbett commented.
Calliana Kondolios defeated Emerson's Pimenova 6-4, 6-1 at the #3 spot to get Maryville halfway to the victory.
Jasmine Muecke at the #4 position secured the win with a 6-1, 6-4 match victory.
Coach Corbett said of the freshmen:
"Even if Calli and Jasmine were too zoned in on their own match or even oblivious to the overall situation as freshmen, we are proud of them for coming through for the team when it mattered the most"
With her victory, Muecke improves to 2-0 at the #4 spot for the year and an even 3-3 overall. Kondolios improves to an impressive 5-1 on the year and 2-1 at the #3 spot.
Maryville improves to 4-2 on the season and will next match up with Agnes Scott in the team's first CCS action of the year on March 21st.
