BUENA VISTA, Va. – Maryville's two-game Virginia winning streak came to a halt in a narrow 4-3 defeat Saturday at Southern Virginia.
Maryville won singles matches at the Nos. 1, 3 and 5 position.
James Smith prevailed at No. 1 by a 6-4, 6-4 score line, improving to 3-0 in dual matches this season.
Luka Romano rolled at the No. 3 position thanks to 6-1 and 6-2 set wins. And at No. 5,
Jackson Meyer needed a third-set tiebreaker, but he pulled through 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Scots dropped the doubles point 3-0, although two matches were tight. Smith and
Field Myatt fell 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, and Meyer and
Jonathan Crane went down 7-6 (7-5) at the No. 2 slot.
Myatt also lost in a third set 0-6, 7-5, 6-2 or this match could have flipped the other way.
The Scots, now 3-1, begin Collegiate Conference of the South action Wednesday at Covenant in a 4 p.m. start. Southern Virginia improved to 3-3.
