DEMOREST, Ga. – Alyssa Smith grabbed a win at No. 3 singles to highlight Maryville's day of Collegiate Conference of the South play at Piedmont. The host Lions won 7-0.
Smith won the first set of her singles match 6-4 before falling 6-1, 6-1 in the other two sets.
Elizabeth Shwaiko dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles and
Calliana Kondolios lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles for Maryville's best chances against the Lions.
"We competed and didn't back down," Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett said. "They have a good team with a lot of bench players and a large crowd making a lot of noise. We played with poise and gave a good effort for the most part. They are just a stronger and deeper team than we are.
"Good for Alyssa. She is the first player since I've been here to take a set off them."
Piedmont improved to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the CCS. Maryville is 5-3 and 1-1. The Scots are home Thursday against Huntingdon in a 2 p.m. start.
