Women's Tennis Drops Conference Home Opener

Comeback Falls Just Short

MARYVILLE - Despite winning the last three singles sets, the Scots fell on Thursday to conference foe Huntingdon 4-3.

MC dropped the doubles point with losses at the #1 and #3 positions. Abby Diggs and Alyssa Smith improved to 6-2 on the year together, defeating Natalie Tedesco & Ella Hathcock at the #2 spot 6-3. A tight finish at the #3 spot closed out the doubles point as the freshman/sophomore pair of Jasmine Muecke and Josie McRae fell to Dalyce Sanders & Angelina Mazza 6-4.

In singles, the Scots dropped matches at the one and three spots to start off, and then dropped a three-set match at the two to go down 4-0. Maryville stormed back to take the last three matches, but it was already over as the Hawks secured enough points to take the win.

Women's Tennis

Freshman Jasmine Muecke continues to impress as she earned her fifth win of the year and has now won four of her last five. She defeated Ella Hathcock at the #4 spot 6-4, 6-3 to get the Scots their first singles point.

Josie McRae won her match at the #6 spot, defeating Angelina Mazza 6-2, 6-1 to improve to 2-0 at the six.

Abby Diggs

Senior Abby Diggs finished off the match for the Scots, defeating Athens DeVer  6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

Coach Doug Corbett's Comments:
" I sound like a broken record, but we knew that the doubles point would be crucial for our chances today. Alyssa and Abby did their thing at #2, but we didn't quite get it done overall. It's a team effort, and it never falls on any one player. The positives are that Calli gave a great effort in singles against a strong opponent and we will learn a lot from today's match."

The Scots fall to 5-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference action. LaGrange is next on deck for Maryville April 5 at home.
