CINCINNATI, Oh. - Maryville College closed out the regular season with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Earlham.
Josie McRae and
Jasmine Muecke started off doubles play with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. The duo is now 6-2 together for the season. The graduating duo of
Abby Diggs and
Alyssa Smith sealed the doubles point for the Scots with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot, improving their record at that position to 5-2 this year.
Calliana Kondolios earned the first doubles victory for the Scots after the team started down 0-2 with losses at the Nos. 3 and 1 spots by
Jasmine Muecke and
Elizabeth Shwaiko. The Freshman took down Mackenzie Davis 7-5, 6-1 to improve to 12-7 overall for the year and 4-3 at the No. 2 spot.
Abby Diggs took down Paige Hobbs at the six spot 6-1, 6-0, earning her 11th win of the season and the 31st of her career.
Josie McRae fell at the No. 6 spot 6-0, 6-4, creating a tie-breaking set at the No. 4 spot.
Alyssa Smith defeated Natalee McCann at the no. 4 spot 6-4, 7
7-6
5 and secured the victory for the Scots. Smith is now 12-8 on the year, tied for the second most wins on the team with Muecke.
"This was one of those matches wehre I knew how important the doubles point could be" Coach
Doug Corbett said. "Diggs and Smith played well and made great adjustments mid match that were key for us. Calliana (Kondolios) got us another big win. She just keeps getting better. Alyssa (Smith) remained calm and collected with the match on her shoulders and I am super proud of her and the team. I am thrilled we have achieved another great memory for all of our seniors!"
The Scots will begin their post-season journey on Thursday against Covenant. Maryville previously defeated the Covenant Scots 6-1 on April 8th.
