MARYVILLE – James Smith was rewarded for a terrific junior season with a place on the 2025 All-Collegiate Conference of the South Second Team.
Smith tied for team honors with 13 singles victories and was the leader in dual-match singles wins with 12. He finished 12-5 in dual matches, with all 17 appearances at the No. 1 singles position.
Jonathan Crane was nominated by the Maryville coaching staff for a place on the CCS All-Sportsmanship Team.
Thursday in Chattanooga, Smith lost his doubles match but came back to win in singles 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (9-7) over Belhaven in the Scots 4-2 loss at the CCS Tournament. Crane also fell in doubles but was leading at No. 6 singles when the quarterfinal match was decided.
Maryville's lone doubles win came from
Jackson Meyer and
Field Myatt at No. 1 with a 6-1 triumph. After Belhaven took the doubles point, the Blazers bumped their lead to 2-0 at No. 3 singles with a victory against
Luka Romano. Myatt prevailed 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to score the first point for the Scots.
Belhaven won again at No. 4 singles over Meyer before Smith kept the Scots alive with his tight match win at the top spot. But with Crane having captured the first set of his match, Belhaven closed things out with a straight-sets win at No. 5 over
Gabriel Villalonga Serra by a 6-4, 7-5 result.
Maryville finishes its season 9-9 after claiming the fifth season in the postseason tournament. Belhaven improves to 10-8 and faces regular season champion Asbury on Friday in Chattanooga.
