Lookout Mountain Triumph

Maryville Defeates Covenant in CCS Action 6-1

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA. - The Maryville Scots defeated Covenant 6-1 Tuesday to improve to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in CCS action.

The Scots showed out strong just south of the Tennessee boarded, defeating conference rival Covenant in all but one match. The freshmen on the team showed out, taking victories in both doubles and singles. Freshman Calliana Kondolios along with senior Elizabeth Shwaiko defeated their opponents from Covenant 6-1 at the two spot, and Freshman Jasmine Muecke paired with Sophomore Josie McRae won their doubles set 6-2 at the no. 3 spot. Abby Diggs and Alyssa Smith blanked their opponents 6-0 on court no. 1.

The Freshmen took their sets in singles as well, with Kondolios capping off the day for the Scots at the no. 2 spot, winning 7-67-2, 7-67-3. Jasmine Muecke got the second point in singles for the Scots at the five spot, winning 6-4, 6-2.

Josie McRae was the first to finish for Maryville, winning 6-1, 6-4 at the no. 6 position. Alyssa Smith defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-3 at the three spot. Elizabeth Shwaiko dropped the only point for the Scots on the day, dropping three close sets at the no. 1 spot. Abby Diggs won her ninth match of the year, defeating Christina English in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Diggs has the best winning percentage on the team with a 9-3 record.

Coach's comments:

"Doubles was a big difference maker when you look at this match compared to the match against Huntingdon. Josie in particular really placed well and gave us a boost. The momentum going into singles helped psychologically as we played more lose. Diggs and Smith were able to put a less than stellar doubles match behind them. Calli had a strong singles match against a very scrappy opponent. Even though Ebeth (Shwaiko) lost her match, she put forth a good effort against one of Covenant's strongest players over the last few years. Proud of the girls and this was well earned"

Next up for MC is conference foe Belhaven, Friday at 11 AM in Maryville.
