MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Maryville stayed alive in the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament on Thursday with a late-night 7-4 victory over Asbury.
Earlier Thursday, Maryville was pushed into the losers' bracket with a 4-0 defeat to No. 16-ranked Belhaven. The Scots managed five hits against vaunted Blazers hurler Macy Funderburk and were within 1-0 of the defending national runner-up until Belhaven scored two in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Against Asbury, the Scots broke on top with four runs in the second inning.
Ashtyn Barga had an RBI-double and
Brecca Williams followed with a two-run double to highlight the frame. In the fourth,
Catie Zani,
Ryleigh Maples and
Jessica Harris all had run-scoring hits to push Maryville in front 7-0.
Jacey Goetzinger pitched into the fifth inning and notched the victory, her second of the tournament and eighth of the season.
Paige Dickinson and
Tia Stewart covered the final 2 and 2-3 innings, with Stewart notching her third save after a perfect seventh inning.
For the day, Williams went 4-for-6 with a run scored and two RBIs. Her four hits on the day upped her season total to a career-high 73 and her batting average to .562. Harris finished 4-for-7 with a run and an RBI, while Maples added a 2-for-7 performance with one run scored and one RBI.
Other Scots with hits were Dickinson,
Campbell White and
Emma Blankenship.
The CCS Tournament is down to four teams, and Maryville (22-19) faces Piedmont in an elimination game Friday at 2 p.m. Central time. The winner turns right around and faces the loser of the earlier game in the day between undefeated Huntingdon and Belhaven. The championship round is Saturday.
