MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Maryville men's soccer showed grit and determination Saturday afternoon at Bob Pearson Field, rallying from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against LeTourneau.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board first when Marcos Gonzalez struck in the 29th minute, sending the Scots into halftime chasing the game. LeTourneau doubled its advantage early in the second half, as Karsten Guerra finished in the 63rd minute to make it 2-0.
Maryville refused to fold. The comeback began in the 71st minute when freshman Jonathan Case, coming off the bench, delivered a clutch finish to pull the Scots within striking distance. From there, Maryville controlled much of the possession and kept pressing forward. The breakthrough came late, as sophomore Hayden Tate netted the equalizer in the 88th minute to level the score and ignite the home crowd.
The Scots closed with 10 total shots, including seven on goal, while goalkeeper Christian Alcaraz posted four saves to keep Maryville in the game. Defensively, Will Gallaher and the back line weathered 14 shots from the Yellow Jackets, holding them off the board in the final 28 minutes.
Maryville outshot LeTourneau 8-5 in the second half and showed poise through a physical closing stretch that saw three Yellow Jackets issued yellow cards. With the result, the Scots continue to build momentum heading into conference play.
Maryville is back in action Wednesday, September 24th against the Berea Blue Bears. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM at the MC Soccer Complex in Maryville, Tennessee.
