Maryville Dominates Tournament Weekend with 3-0 Sweeps Across the Board

GAME ONE
MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Maryville volleyball puts on a dominant display in a 3-0 sweep over the Warren Wilson Owls on Saturday afternoon. This win over the Owls increases Maryville's record to 8-2, 0-0, and drops Warren Wilson down to 1-8, 0-1.

A Warren Wilson kill started out set one, until three service aces by Kylie Wilhelmi, and two kills from Kiana Kent and Ava George Wilber allowed the Scots to go on a 10-0 run before the Owls could respond. Despite having to overcome a large gap, Warren Wilson began to catch up the Scots due to multiple Maryville attack errors, shifting the score to 15-12, still in Maryville's favor. A kill and ace from Warren Wilson, and a Maryville service error allowed the Owls to close the gap and tie up the set, 17-17. Both teams began to go back and forth in scoring, until the Scots were able to pull ahead with a Kill from Audry Neil and Wilhelmi, and a service ace from Wilhelmi. A final attack error by the Owls ended the first set, 25-21.

Set two started differently than set one, with Maryville scoring first with a kill from Walton. Warren Wilson responded with a kill of their own, starting back-and-forth play. A service error from the owls started a four-point run until a service error paused the scoring for Maryville, 11-6. Maryville quickly countered with a kill from Izzy Freeman starting a big Maryville run. The Scots went on to score 12 points in a row, led by Dakota Vaiese with five service aces, and Wilhelmi, Freeman, and Wilber with four kills total. A Maryville service error granted Warren Wilson their final point of the set, and a kill from Wilhelmi and an attack error from the Owls closed out set two in favor of the Scots, 25-7.

Warren Wilson kicked off set three, but Wilhelmi followed with a subsequent kill. After a few alternating points, Maryville went of a seven-point run, with three kills from Walton, two from Wilhelmi, and a service ace from Maddie Bouvier. The Owls retaliated with two kills of their own. In combination with two attack errors by the Scots, Warren Wilson was only down by four. Kills from Freeman, Wilber, and Wilhelmi extended the lead for the Scots until a Maryville service error paused scoring. Despite fighting backs with kills of their own, Warren Wilson could not pull ahead, losing set three, 25-20.
Maryville is back in action tonight with their final game of the Maryville Quad Match against Berea at 5 PM.

GAME TWO
MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Maryville ended the tournament weekend with a 3-0 record against Oglethorpe, Berea, and Warren Wilson. Maryville is heading into the new week with an overall record of 9-2 overall.

Maryville started off set one with a service error, causing the Scots to fight back from a deficit right from the jump. Despite two kills from Kiana Kent, and one-a-piece from Ruby Walton and Cailin Mastropasqua, the Scots were quickly down 10-4 early in the match. Although kills from Kylie Wilhelmi, Walton, and Mastropasqua closed in on the gap between Maryville and Berea, the Scots were struggling to catch up with the score being 18-10. While Berea was sitting at 21 points, the Scots were able to go on a four-point scoring streak, with points from Wilhelmi and Mastropasqua closing the deficit to only two points. A service error from the Scots gave the Blue Bears a point to make their score 23, but Kent and Mastropasqua quickly went on a run, gaining the lead over Berea, 24-23. Maryville was able to close out the set with kills from Audry Neil and Wilhelmi, earning the first set win over Berea, 26-24.

Wilhelmi earned the first point of the game with a kill, but Berea followed with a kill of their own. Kills from Kent, and Mastropasqua upped the score to 7-3 before Berea was able to chop at the scoring difference. Maryville's Wilhelmi and Mastropasqua quickly muffled Berea with five points in a row until the Blue Bears could respond. The Scots effortlessly went on a 14-2 run before Berea was able to stop their stride. With a kill from Mastropasqua, a kill and service ace from Wilhelmi, and an attack error by Berea, the Scots closed out set two, 25-10.

Set three started out with back-and-forth play until the Scots capitalized on a Berea service error and went on a 8-1 run. The Blue Bears attempted to fight back, even going on a four-point run of their own, until a kill from Mastropasqua ended their streak and awarded Maryville the ball. Maryville's final run of the night featured kills from Walton, a service ace from Kyrah Bowles and Megan Fairburn. Despite a kill from Berea in the middle of this run, a Blue Bear attack error ended the match in favor of the Scots, 25-13.
