MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Maryville women's soccer delivered one of its biggest results of the season Wednesday night, knocking off visiting Berry College 1-0 at the MC Soccer Complex.
Berry entered the matchup at 5-1-1, with its only defeat coming against nationally ranked No. 4 Emory. But the Scots matched the Vikings' intensity from the opening whistle and capitalized midway through the first half. In the 31st minute, freshman forward
Katie Cotten broke the deadlock, slotting home a pass from
Katie Corley to put Maryville on top 1-0.
From there, it was the Maryville defense and goalkeeper
Kristen Burns who took center stage. Burns made four saves in the shutout, including a pair of key stops late in the first half as Berry pushed forward looking for an equalizer. The back line, led by
Addison Kantor, Elle Fair, and Katie Ray, held strong to earn the team's third win of the year and first shutout victory against a regionally prominent opponent.
Maryville (3-5) outshot Berry 15-8 and generated seven corner kicks to the Vikings' three, keeping consistent pressure throughout the second half to secure the result.
The Scots now look to build on the momentum as conference play continues this weekend.
