DANVILLE, Ky. – Maryville men's soccer looked ready to grab a big win on the road Sunday, but a late penalty spoiled the finish as the Scots and Centre ended the game at a 2-2 draw in the finale of the Bob Allen Nissan Classic. This draw moves Maryville to 2-1-2 on the season, and it holds Centre at 0-2-2.
After a scoreless first half, Centre struck first in the 59
th minute when Ryan O'Hara found the back of the net, however, Maryville wasted little time responding. Just six minutes later,
Jonathan Case slipped a pass to
Oumar Kamara, who tucked away a goal to level up the match.
The scoring momentum carried into the 80
th minute when defender
Will Gallaher pushed Maryville ahead off a ball passed from
Brady Hammer. Unfortunately, with three minutes left in the match, the Colonels capitalized on a penalty shot, tying up the match, 2-2.
Notably, goalkeeper
Christian Alcaraz came up with three saves to anchor the Scots, while the offense tallied eight shots with five on target.
At the close of the Bob Allen Nissan Classic, four Scots were named to the All-Tournament Team: Gallaher, Kamara, Alcaraz, and forward
Ben Brophy.
Head Coach
Pepe Fernandez praised his group afterward, noting that Friday's match was "definitely our best performance of the year," but what impressed him the most was how his players found a way to battle through on Sunday. "I'm very proud of the guys," Fernandez said. "After five games in nine days, they were able to grit it out, and it turned out to be a really good weekend, especially for our freshman who stepped up and scored most of our goals."
Maryville is back in action on Wednesday, September 10
th when they head out to Sewanee to take on the Sewanee Tigers at 6:00 PM.
