WILMORE, Ky. — The Maryville men's basketball team continued its strong start to CCS play Tuesday night, defeating Asbury 71–57 inside the Luce Center.
The win moves the Scots to 12–4 overall and 3–0 in conference action, while also extending Maryville's perfect record against Asbury to 6-0 all-time. Historically, the Scots have averaged 87 points per game against the Eagles, but Tuesday's contest required a different approach, as Maryville relied on rebounding, ball security, and depth to secure a double-digit road victory.
"I thought in moments we did what we were supposed to do," said Head Coach Raul Placeres. "That was kind of the theme today. We had moments, but it was nice to see different guys step up."
Maryville controlled the tempo early, using strong defensive possessions and balanced scoring to open a lead in the first half. The Scots shared the ball efficiently and took care of possessions, building a 39–27 advantage at the break.
"It was a total team effort," Placeres said. "We shared the ball well again, and we only had seven turnovers for the game, which is a good sign."
Matt Schneider led the Scots with 15 points and six rebounds, while Jamal Ware added 12 points and provided energy on both ends of the floor. Jackson Garner finished with 10 points, and Chase Morgan anchored the paint with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds. Javi Rosell and R.J. Simmons each chipped in eight points, as Maryville showcased its depth throughout the lineup.
"It was nice to see Jamal and the things that he brings to the table," Placeres said. "Matt had a nice little string there in the first half that got us going. We almost had six guys in double figures — three were one basket away."
Despite shooting below its usual efficiency, Maryville found success by dominating the glass and limiting second chances. The Scots finished with a 38–25 rebounding advantage and allowed just one offensive rebound all night.
"I was really proud of the fact we only allowed one offensive rebound for the entire game," Placeres said. "That's obviously a season low. We out-rebounded them by 13, which is a good thing."
Collin Smith provided a strong presence off the bench, particularly on the boards, while Simmons delivered valuable minutes in the first half.
"I thought Collin Smith was phenomenal," Placeres said. "His energy, his defense, and the extra possessions he gave us were huge. And I thought R.J. gave us great minutes in the first half."
The Scots maintained control throughout the second half, responding to each Asbury run and closing out the game with disciplined play down the stretch.
"We didn't shoot our best tonight, and to be able to win by double digits shooting the percentages we shot, not all games are the same," Placeres said. "Sometimes you win in different forms, and that was tonight."
With the victory, the Scots earned their 12th win of the season and remained undefeated in league play, continuing a strong trend away from home.
"That speaks to preparation and toughness of our program," Placeres said. "To be 30–2 on the road in conference play is pretty darn tough to do."
Maryville now turns its attention to a CCS weekend beginning with Piedmont on Friday before facing Belhaven on Saturday.
"The only thing on our mind right now is Piedmont," Placeres said. "We'll get in the weight room, spend time in the film room, and get ready. We know we've got our work cut out for us."
