Volleyball Picks Up First Conference Win Against Oglethorpe

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Maryville College volleyball team (7-4, 1-3) picked up its first conference win of the season with a 3-0 sweep over the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels (4-10, 0-4).

The Scots hit an impressive .303, recording 40 kills, 32 assists, 43 digs, 10 service aces, and seven blocks. Charli Grubbs led the offense with 12 kills, followed by Lexi Davis and Ruby Walton with nine each. Megan Fairburn paced the Scots with 13 assists, while Dakota Vaiese added 11. Defensively, Kyrah Bowles led Maryville with 13 digs.

Maryville found itself fighting from behind early in the opening set, as Oglethorpe claimed the first five points. The Scots responded with a 9-0 run fueled by kills from Walton, Grubbs, and Vaiese, along with three service aces from Bowles. After the Petrels briefly halted the run, Maryville added six unanswered points, highlighted by Davis and Walton, to extend its lead to 16-7. Oglethorpe answered with a 6-1 run of its own, but the Scots regained control behind contributions from Fairburn, Grubbs, and Aubrey Gibson to secure a 25-16 victory in the first set.

The Petrels again jumped out to an early lead in the second set, taking the first four points. Maryville quickly closed the gap, with kills from Walton and Grubbs helping the Scots take their first lead at 7-6. Walton added two more points before Katelyn Eldred recorded a service ace to extend the advantage. Oglethorpe battled back to pull within one, but contributions from Gibson, Grubbs, Walton, and Izzy Freeman helped Maryville hold off the Petrels and claim the second set, 25-23.

Maryville took control early in the third set. A service ace from Davis, two kills from Grubbs, and a pair of Oglethorpe attack errors gave the Scots a 5-1 advantage. Walton, Grubbs, and Vaiese continued to fuel the offense as Maryville maintained its lead at 14-12. Davis, Gibson, Walton, and Maddie Bouvier added key attacks down the stretch, helping the Scots close out the sweep with a 25-17 win in the third set.

Maryville returns to action Saturday, Oct. 3, taking on No. 14 Centre at 2 PM before facing No. 8 Berry at 4:30 PM.
