MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Maryville College battled No. 15 Berry College on Homecoming Saturday at Lloyd L. Thornton Stadium, with the Scots showing resilience against one of the Southern Athletic Association's top teams in a 27-7 setback.
Coming off a statement 16-12 road upset of then-No. 6 Trinity, Maryville faced another tough conference test. The Scots continued to compete defensively throughout the afternoon and found the end zone in the fourth quarter, finishing the contest with several individual performances to build on heading into the final stretch of the season.
Defense Battles Early
Berry opened the scoring with a 21-yard field goal before adding a defensive touchdown late in the first quarter to take a 10-0 lead. The Vikings extended their advantage in the second quarter with a touchdown pass and a field goal, carrying a 20-0 lead into halftime.
Despite the early deficit, the Scots continued working to slow Berry's offense. Maryville's defense recorded two forced fumbles, including one by Trey Wilhite, while Camren Gunn recovered a fumble in the second half to give the Scots possession.
Bryce Currie led the defensive effort with 10 total tackles. Gunn added four tackles, a tackle for loss and the fumble recovery as Maryville continued to make plays on the defensive side of the ball.
Scots Keep Fighting
Berry added a 65-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter, but Maryville continued to look for opportunities to get on the scoreboard.
The Scots broke through late in the fourth quarter. After taking over at their own 28-yard line following Gunn's fumble recovery, Maryville put together a 36-yard scoring drive. Quarterback Jaxon Dabrowski finished the possession with a five-yard rushing touchdown with 4:49 remaining. Jackson White added the extra point to make it 27-7.
Dabrowski led the passing attack with 120 yards and added the rushing touchdown. Jalen McCullough paced the receiving corps with four catches for 60 yards, providing a consistent target for the Scots throughout the afternoon.
Building on a Strong Conference Run
Maryville finished with 142 yards of total offense against a strong Berry defense. While the Scots were unable to match the Vikings' scoring output, the contest followed a challenging stretch of conference games that has seen Maryville establish itself as a contender in the SAA.
The Scots entered Homecoming riding a four-game winning streak, highlighted by their road upset of then-No. 6 Trinity. That victory demonstrated Maryville's ability to compete with nationally ranked opponents, and the Scots will look to carry that confidence into their remaining games.
Next Game
Maryville continues its 2026 campaign after a week off next week, and will then host Southwestern on November 7th as the Scots look to bounce back and return to the win column.
