Volleyball Falls to Sewanee in Final Conference Match

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Maryville College volleyball team fell in a three-set sweep to the Sewanee Tigers Tuesday evening inside Juhan Gymnasium. The Scots recorded 38 digs, 30 kills, 29 assists, and five service aces as a team. Addison Appleby and Dakota Vaiese led the offensive effort, while Kyrah Bowles and Appleby anchored the defense.

Appleby opened the match with a point for the Scots before Aubrey Gibson and Ruby Walton added to the early scoring. Katelyn Eldred recorded a service ace to tie the set at 5-5. Sewanee responded with a run of its own to reclaim the lead, 8-6. The teams traded points over the next seven rallies, with Izzy Freeman, Charli Grubbs, and Appleby contributing for Maryville. The Tigers used a Scots service error and attack error to extend their advantage to 15-12, but Appleby, Walton, and Freeman continued to chip away at the deficit. Leading 21-19, Sewanee closed out the opening frame with three kills and a Maryville attack error to take the set, 25-19.

Sewanee claimed the opening point of the second set, but Maryville quickly responded to even the score at 1-1. The Tigers capitalized on a Scots service error to put together a 6-0 run and build a 9-2 advantage. Lexi Davis, Walton, and Freeman helped spark a Maryville response, as the Scots put together a 4-0 run that included a Vaiese service ace. Trailing 18-11, Maryville mounted another comeback, scoring eight of the next nine points. A Sewanee service error helped ignite the run, while several Tiger attack errors and kills from Freeman and Davis brought the Scots even at 19-19. Freeman and Appleby added kills down the stretch, but Sewanee held on to claim the second set, 25-22.

The Tigers opened the third set with three consecutive points before Maryville responded with a kill from Vaiese and a service ace from Appleby. Grubbs, Walton, Gibson, Bowles, Freeman, and Appleby all contributed to the Scots' offensive effort, but Maryville was unable to overcome the early deficit. Sewanee closed out the final frame, 25-13, to secure the sweep.

Maryville returns to action Saturday, Nov. 7, at 4:00 PM, traveling to take on Covenant in its final match of the season.
