Women's Tennis Shines Despite Setback

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville's women's tennis team battled against defending conference champions Asbury University on March 12th. With some bright spots in their encounter, Asbury got the better of the Scots, taking the match 2-5.

Doubles had some close encounters, with the Scots coming close to a clinch early in the match. #3 pair Jasmine Muecke and Josie McRae had a classy performance to give the Scots a doubles win 6-3, but unfortunately Asbury took the point and started the match up early.

Singles started with more of the same from the Scots, with Asbury showing their strength at the top of the lineup. However,  Clara Plass had an decisive win at the #4 singles position, dominating her match with a 6-2 6-2 scoreline. Following that, Maggie Hackney had a nailbiter of a match, coming through in the clutch moments 7-6 7-5 at #5 singles to add another point for the Scots. McRae also had an incredibly close match but fell in three sets.

"We continue making progress as a team," Head Coach Doug Corbett said. "Clara in particular is getting better every match. They're all very coachable, learning, and growing as players."

"Asbury is very strong at the top of the lineup but we showed our depth and made it competitive, which is all we can do," Corbett added.

Maryville looks to bounce back on Saturday, March 14th, against Earlham College in a spring break matchup. Maryville will look to stay ahead in the series score.
