Elizabethtown, Ky. – The Maryville College Scots finished play at the Pioneer Classic with a 1-1 record, falling to Transylvania before bouncing back with a win over Anderson in the tournament finale.
Game One: Transylvania vs. Maryville
Both teams opened the game with quick at-bats, each going down in order in the first inning. Transylvania broke through in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs off gap hits and Maryville errors.
The Scots had an opportunity to respond with runners in scoring position but were unable to capitalize, and the Pioneers extended their lead with three more runs in the third inning.
In the top of the fourth, Paige Dickinson doubled to put herself in scoring position, and Olivia Harris followed with an RBI single to score Maryville's lone run. Transylvania answered with additional runs in the bottom half of the inning, securing a 10-1 victory.
In the circle, Tia Stewart and Watiyeli Taylor combined to face 25 batters and record four strikeouts.
Game Two: Maryville vs. Anderson
Looking to rebound, Maryville came out energized in game two. Anderson struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a Maryville error to load the bases before bringing in a run on a ground ball.
Maryville answered in the bottom half, as Emma Blankenship drew a walk and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball and wild pitch. Sydney Dickinson's groundout brought her home to tie the game.
The Scots took the lead in the second inning. Desiree Nance led off with a single, moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Abby Woodard, and scored on a single from Tate Romero.
Maryville added to its lead in the third inning. S. Dickinson singled, and Catie Zani followed with an RBI double to right field. After a pitching change, Ryleigh Maples drove in another run to make it 4-1.
Anderson narrowed the gap in the fourth with a triple that scored one run, but Maryville responded in the fifth. Maples delivered a sacrifice fly, and Romero added an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-2.
In the seventh inning, Jacey Goetzinger entered in relief and shut the door with a 1-2-3 inning to seal the victory.
Whitney Carr earned the win in the circle, allowing just two hits over 24 batters faced to secure her third victory of the season.
The Scots are back in action this Friday at 12:00 and 2:00 PM, taking on #9 Huntingdon before heading out to LaGrange on Saturday for a double header scheduled at 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
