MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Maryville men's tennis opened up conference play against Huntingdon College on Saturday, March 7th. Maryville continues to shine in recent history, this time blitzing to 7-0 win and sweeping for the first time in school history. Maryville moves to 3-3 on the season, looking to carry their strong momentum forwards.
Doubles was the first domino that fell the Scots way. #1 duo Steven Fitzsimmons and James Smith rolled to a 6-2 win against their opponents, and shortly after #3 duo Field Myatt and Grant Price clinched 6-3 to give the first point to the Scots. #2 pair Jackson Meyer and Benjamin Schneider also had a competitive doubles match, but ultimately fell after the other matches finished.
Singles continued to have the dominoes fall Maryville's way. Price opened the floodgates with a dominant 6-0 6-1 win at #2, Smith had a clean victory at #1 6-0 6-4, and Myatt clinched the match at #3 6-1 6-2 to close the match for the Scots. However, the Scots weren't finished quite yet. Luka Romano had a nailbiter of a match at the #4 position that was incredibly entertaining, ending in a Scots win. Despite falling in the first set 6-7 (2-7), he came back and won the second 6-3, and won the third set 10-6 to put the Scots to 5-0. Eric Vornhagen was quick to follow, putting up a dominant victory 6-0 6-1 at the #6 spot, and to finish the sweep, Fitzsimmons proved his resilience and continued his good form, winning 6-3 4-6 10-7 at the #5 position.
Maryville's next match was supposed to be against Lagrange College, on March 8th. However, due to inclement weather, that match is now scheduled for March 29th.
The Scots will play next at home on March 10th, against both Hastings University and Wittenberg University. The Hastings match will take place at 1:30 p.m., and Wittenberg will aim to start at 4:30 p.m.
