MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Maryville women's tennis opened up conference play against Huntingdon College on Saturday, March 7th. Maryville, carrying momentum from their last three matches, had an incredibly strong win, downing the Hawks 5-2 to move to 3-3 on the season.
Doubles was a strong start for Maryville, with both the #1 and #2 positions cruising to clinch a doubles point. #1 position Calliana Kondolios and Mckena Spencer eased into a 6-3 win, and #2 pair Maggie Hackney and Clara Plass had no problems, winning their match 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.
Singles proved to be more competitive for the Scots, with Huntingdon evening the score at one apiece fairly quickly. However, Muecke quickly made the score 2-1 for the Scots with a classy 6-2, 6-3 win at the #3 slot. With the score deadlocked for a while, Kondolios broke the ice for the Scots, sealing the deal with a gritty match, making it 3-1 for the Scots with a 7-6, 6-3 win at the #2 position. Shortly after, Plass clinched the match for the good guys, winning at #4 singles 6-4, 6-1. McRae also added on another win to her season, sending the Scots a point for insurance at the #6 slot 6-2, 6-4.
"I knew going in that getting the doubles point would be critical and the girls delivered," Head Coach Doug Corbett said. "Very proud of the growh they have show already this year. We have coachable players that are eager to learn. I've been telling them our challenging early schedule would pay off in conference play and that was the case today."
With the Scots putting up a great win against Huntingdon, they were originally scheduled to play Lagrange College on Sunday, March 8th. However, due to inclement weather, the match is postponed to March 29th. The team's next match will be at home against Wittenberg University, on March 10th at 4:30 p.m.
