RALEIGH, N.C. – The Maryville Scots concluded their time at the Raleigh Classic with a 2-1 record. Maryville opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Meredith, followed by a four-set loss to former conference foe LaGrange, before closing the tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Johnson & Wales Charlotte.

Game One

Maryville battled former CCS foe LaGrange in a four-set match. Ruby Walton led the Scots' attack with 14 kills, while Dakota Vaiese recorded 42 assists. Kyrah Bowles paced the defense with 26 digs. As a team, Maryville recorded 49 kills, 48 assists, 63 digs and 10 service aces.

LaGrange opened the first set with three straight kills before Maryville responded with three consecutive points, highlighted by kills from Walton, Vaiese and Charli Grubbs. The teams continued to trade points, with LaGrange holding a 13-11 advantage before the Panthers created some separation with a 6-1 run to take a 19-12 lead.

An attack error by LaGrange sparked a Maryville response, as the Scots used a 9-2 run to even the score at 21-21. Lexi Davis added a service ace during the stretch, while Walton, Grubbs and Jasmine Gross contributed kills. The teams traded points down the stretch before LaGrange closed out the set, 25-23.

The second set featured another competitive start, with both teams exchanging points throughout the early stages. LaGrange opened with three straight kills and maintained its advantage, while Maryville received offensive contributions from Gross, Vaiese, Davis, Grubbs, Walton and Aubrey Gibson. The Panthers ultimately secured the second set, 25-19.

Maryville responded in the third set, using a pair of runs to build a comfortable lead. After LaGrange took the opening point, a kill from Davis sparked a 7-1 Maryville run, with Gross and Davis contributing to the surge. Later in the set, kills from Walton, Davis and Gibson helped the Scots extend their advantage to 19-7. LaGrange responded with a run of its own, but Maryville maintained control and took the set, 25-17.

The fourth set remained close early, with neither team able to establish much separation. Maryville held a narrow 9-8 advantage before LaGrange used a four-point run to take the lead. Davis answered with a kill, but the Panthers continued to build momentum and extended their advantage to 19-10.

Maryville responded with an 8-1 run to cut the deficit to one possession, but LaGrange closed out the set, 25-22, to secure the match.

Game Two

The Scots closed out the Raleigh Classic with a 3-0 victory over Johnson & Wales Charlotte. Maryville recorded 41 kills, 37 assists, 29 digs and 10 service aces in the sweep. Charli Grubbs led the offense with 13 kills, while Vaiese recorded 31 assists and Bowles added 14 digs.

Grubbs opened the first set with a kill, followed by four more Maryville kills from Grubbs, Lexi Davis and Jasmine Gross. After the teams traded points, Johnson & Wales put together a six-point run to take a 15-11 lead.

Maryville answered with a seven-point run of its own, highlighted by two kills from Grubbs and three consecutive service aces from Alana Barbarito. The Wildcats later tied the score at 20-20, but Davis and Gross provided the offense down the stretch, with four combined kills helping Maryville take the opening set, 25-23.

Maryville carried its momentum into the second set, as successful attacks from Grubbs, Davis, Walton and Vaiese, along with service aces from Bowles and Maddie Bouvier, helped the Scots build a 20-12 advantage. Johnson & Wales responded with several points, but a kill from Gross and an attack error by the Wildcats allowed Maryville to close out the set, 25-17.

The third set featured another competitive start, with Johnson & Wales using a kill and two service aces to take an early advantage. After several lead changes, the Wildcats built a 17-11 lead.

Maryville steadily chipped away at the deficit before a four-point run, sparked by a kill from Walton, brought the Scots even at 20-20. Following two consecutive Johnson & Wales attack errors, Maryville finished the set with kills from Gibson and Grubbs to complete the 3-0 sweep with a 25-22 third-set victory.

The Scots return to action Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7:00 PM, when they host Berea in Maryville's home opener.
